One explanation was that they had to play much louder on the rooftop outdoors, driving the Twin's preamps. Another theory is that their amps were early UK imported prototypes of the Silverface line of Fender amps, which had a different circuit I'm achieving this crunch by using boost pedals into my 1974 Fender Pro Reverb, a very similar amp to their Twin Reverbs.
