Voluto da Papa Innocenzo X Pamphilj nel 1644 e progettato da Alessandro Algardi, è uno dei luoghi più belli della capitale anche grazie al "giardino segreto" decorato da siepi che ricordano nella forma i simboli araldici dei Pamphilj (la colomba e il giglio). Dopo i fasti papali nel XVII secolo, nel 1849 la zona fu teatro dei sanguinosi scontri fra le truppe garibaldine che difendevano la Repubblica Romana e quelle francesi venute in soccorso dello Stato Pontificio. Ma è negli anni '80 del '900 che il Casino del Buon Respiro - anche noto appunto come Casino dell'Algardi - diventa oggetto di un altra battaglia, questa per fortuna tutta culturale: l'allora capo del governo Bettino Craxi cercò di "appropriarsene" per convertirlo nella residenza personale del presidente del Consiglio, e per impedirglielo si mobilitarono in molti fra cui Giulio Carlo Argan e Antonio Cederna. Dopo una lunga mediazione, il Casino seicentesco divenne sede di rappresentanza della presidenza del Consiglio ed è per lo più usato in occasione delle visite di capi di Stato o di governo stranieri: è rimasta quasi leggendaria a Roma quella, durata ben tre giorni, del dittatore libico Muammar Gheddafi, che ricevuto da Silvio Berlusconi nel 2009, trasferì la sua famosa "tenda beduina" e le sue guardie del corpo, "le Amazzoni", proprio nel giardino antistante il Casino dell'Algardi. E anche in questi giorni la splendida residenza a Villa Pamphilj è stata oggetto di polemiche: Conte l'ha scelto per gli Stati Generali, per la sua bellezza e forse per evitare un accentramento troppo governativo su Palazzo Chigi, ma le forze di opposizione hanno rifiutato l'invito all'evento, bollando la sede come non istituzionale. A quel punto è toccato al presidente del Consiglio precisare: "Sono incorsi in un infortunio: Villa Pamphili è una sede istituzionale in cui sono stati incontrati tanti capi di Stato". E d'altronde nella storia, prima d'ora, è difficile incontrare qualcuno che sia rimasto insensibile al fascino del Casino del Bel Respiro.
